Despite the arrival of the Trinity shopping centre and the even newer Victoria Gate, there are still plenty of independent shops in Leeds that help uphold the fundamental uniqueness and strong character of the city. Here is a round up of 6 of the best ones.

1. Yellow Sunrise

Hidden away in the abundance of little shops in the corn exchange, Yellow Sunrise sells a whole range of lovely little things from around the world. From rugs to tea sets to ornaments to fragranced oils, with designs originating from South East Asia all the way to Morocco. Because of its collection of interesting products, Yellow Sunrise is the perfect place to go for unique gifts or a talking point piece for your home, and is considered one of the best independent shops in Leeds.

2. On the Wall

On the Wall showcases an impressive portfolio of alternative prints and posters for both iconic and modern films, musicians and comics, as well as art prints from Japanese to Art Nouveau styles which they will frame for you. It also stocks a slightly smaller collection of other memorabilia including t-shirts, greetings cards and gifts created by independent artists.

3. Beer Ritz

Another one of the best independent shops in Leeds is, Beer Ritz. A dream for any beer lover whose looking for a little more than what the local Sainsburies has to offer. The shelves are stacked high with craft ales and beers from around the world, as well as a smaller selection of wines and ciders. Although slightly more expensive (but what can you expect from the import charges), Beer Ritz is a welcome asset to those who like to try something a little different to their usual, or just want to find that nice beer they had on holiday.

4. Chirpy

Where creativity comes home to roost, Chirpy sells unique gift products created by independent artists and designers from across the UK including Yorkshire. One of the things that makes Chirpy one of my favourite shops in Leeds is that they regularly change what they stock with new little bits and pieces coming in all the time. So it is always worth popping in to have a look. They even do craft workshops and hold art exhibitions upstairs so there’s also the opportunity to learn a thing or two too.

5. West Yorkshire Cameras

Although it may seem that analogue film is on the decline, it is actually experiencing a bit of a renaissance in more recent years, with shops like West Yorkshire Cameras helping to keep its spirit alive. Stocking a range of reconditioned film cameras from all the major brands as well as lenses, film and other accessories, it is the perfect place to go rediscover the lost art of film photography.

6. Blue Rinse

Since opening in Leeds nearly 20 years ago, Blue Rinse has fought its way up to the top spot for the best place to go for vintage finds in Leeds. Although maybe now a little more expensive than it once was since the resurgence of vintage fashion, Blue Rinse leads the way when it comes to choice. So if you are looking for anything retro, not matter how quirky, Blue Rise will be bound to have the answer.
