It goes without saying there’s more to Osaka’s

It goes without saying there’s more to Osaka’s culture than its food! However it doesn’t get its crown of foodie capital for nothing 😋

Here are some of my favourite foods I tried in Osaka! Let me know what your favourite food was and what I missed (so I have an excuse to go back 😉)!

Okonomiyaki: This was my favourite Osaka foodie find! These are like a Japanese savory pancake made with cabbage, batter, various toppings like pork, seafood, or cheese and finished off with a sweet and savory sauce!

Takoyaki: Octopus-filled batter balls cooked in a special mold and topped with savory sauce, mayo, bonito flakes, and seaweed or spring onions - a great street food dish!

Kushikatsu: You can find these everywhere! They are deep-fried skewers of meat, seafood, and vegetables coated in crispy breadcrumbs, served with a tangy dipping sauce.

Soba: Osaka offers amazing soba noodle dishes! My favourite was the chicken soba at Tori Soba Zagin!

10 Yen Cheese Coin: This is a unique Osaka snack, it’s a 10 Yen coin shaped pancake on a stick with melted cheese in the middle.

The following can be found anywhere in Japan but I tried them in Osaka 😊

Kobe Beef: Kobe Beef is widely available in Osaka due to its close proximity to Kobe!Experience everything from fine dining dishes to street food skewers of it if you’re on more of a budget!

Hokkaido icecream: This is the creamiest tastiest icecream! Hokkaido is known for its high-quality dairy products, and their ice cream is especially creamy and flavorful due to the rich milk used.

Fluffy Japanese pancakes: Also known as “fuwa-fuwa” pancakes or soufflé pancakes, these are incredibly light, airy, jiggly and tasty of course!

🌊 Naoshima stole my heart! This island, just a day trip from Osaka, is a hidden gem of art and beauty 🎨

Japan’s art island is quite small so can be easily explored in a day! You can rent a bikes when you arrive at the ferry port and cycle around to explore the unique art installations scattered across the island, complete with some of Yayoi Kusama’s iconic pumpkins!

The island is also home to two art galleries, the Chichu Art Museum and the Benesse House Museum which are both worth visiting!

However what I loved most about Naoshima was the beautiful sea views, sandy beaches and overall peaceful vibes, especially after the busyness of Japan’s cities!

If you’re in Osaka and love art / nature Naoshima is an absolute must-visit!

These tips will help you capture the charm and beauty of Gion while respecting its cultural significance and the privacy of its residents.

1. Visit Early Morning or Evening: Gion is best experienced during quieter times of day like early morning or evening, when you can capture traditional streets without crowds and in soft, beautiful light.

2. Focus on Details: Gion is rich in intricate details like wooden machiya houses, lanterns, and traditional shop fronts. Focus on these elements when its busier to capture the essence of old Kyoto.

3. Explore Side Streets: Don’t just stick to the main thoroughfares; explore the quieter side streets for more intimate and authentic scenes, although make sure you aren’t trespassing!

4. Use Natural Light: Gion’s narrow streets and wooden structures create interesting light patterns. Use natural light to your advantage, especially during sunrise or sunset.

5. Be Patient: Sometimes the best shots come to those who wait. Take your time to observe the surroundings and anticipate moments worth capturing.

6. Respect Private Property: Remember that Gion is also a residential area. Respect private property and avoid entering restricted areas.

Venture off the main path to discover quieter trails that lead to hidden shrines, bamboo forests and beautiful views.

To access these trails, start by climbing the main path of torii gates, just after the first section of gates, you’ll find paths branching off into the forest. Follow these paths for a more peaceful experience amidst nature.

This teahouse was one of our favourite unexpected

This teahouse was one of our favourite unexpected finds when visiting Mount Fuji!

Its name Tenka Chaya, means ‘teahouse in the sky’ and offers the most beautiful views of Mount Fuji and Lake Kawaguchiko whilst you enjoy traditional local food and drinks.

The second floor of the house is also a memorial room to the famous Japanese author Osamu Dazai and includes first editions of some of his most famous works, as well as the original desk where he wrote the manuscript for 100 Views of Mt. Fuji.

Top tips for seeing Mount Fuji when you visit 👇🏻

1. Consider staying for a couple of days in the Fuji Five Lakes area - not only does this offer you more chances to see Mount Fuji, it’s also a beautiful place to visit in its own right 🌳

2. If you do decide to do a day trip from Tokyo, check the weather forecast the day before for clear skies. There is a Fuji Cam website you can check too which offers views of the mountain from different cameras in the area to check visibility ☁️

3. Mount Fuji’s visibility can vary depending on the time of year. Generally, visibility tends to be clearer during the colder months, particularly in winter and early spring, when the air is crisp and humidity levels are lower ❄️

4. Get up early! One of the best times for viewing Mount Fuji before the clouds roll in are sunrise ☀️

4. Prepare to be flexible on your plans when visiting Mount Fuji as visibility can vary greatly even from hour to hour ⏰

5. Don’t miss out on going to viewing points just because they are popular! Locations such as Lake Kawaguchiko shore front and Chureito Pagoda really are worth the hype! ⛩️

Despite challenges with visibility, witnessing Mount Fuji, whether fully visible or partially obscured, is an amazing experience that you shouldn’t miss when visiting Japan 🇯🇵
